Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has ordered the indefinite closure of 24 cattle markets across four local government areas in a sweeping move to dismantle the financial lifelines of criminal groups. The directive, which takes effect immediately, targets trading hubs allegedly used to sustain banditry and terrorism through cattle rustling, arms trafficking, and kidnapping-for-ransom operations.

Intelligence reports identified the affected markets in Alkaleri, Bauchi, Karfi, and Tafawa Balewa as critical nodes in a shadow economy. Authorities stated that markets in Alkaleri LGA—specifically Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, and Gwana—had become conduits for laundering proceeds from stolen livestock and facilitating logistics for armed groups.

Economic blockade against organised crime

Security agencies have been directed to enforce full compliance with the shutdown until security conditions show measurable improvement. Traditional rulers and local councils have also been mobilised to support enforcement and community sensitisation efforts.

The decision comes as cattle rustling in northern Nigeria evolves from a rural crime into a primary funding stream for organised banditry. Stolen livestock are frequently sold through informal networks, enabling armed groups to finance weapons procurement and sustain their operations.

Strategic shift in security operations

Security analysts describe the situation as a “war economy” where violence and commerce are intertwined. By targeting these markets, the Bauchi State government aims to break the economic backbone of banditry. While the move is intended to curb regional violence, it is expected to disrupt legitimate livelihoods in the short term.

Residents and traders now face significant uncertainty as the closures begin. However, government officials maintain the measure is a necessary intervention to protect communities and restore order across the region.
