Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has expressed grave concern over the health and safety of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently being detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Speaking in a recent interview with Trust TV, Amaechi revealed that El-Rufai was already unwell prior to his detention. He warned that should the former governor die while in custody, it could trigger a volatile situation that the federal government might struggle to contain.

Call for immediate medical release and legal access

Amaechi urged the authorities to permit El-Rufai to return home to seek urgent medical treatment at a hospital. Additionally, he emphasised that the government must grant the detainee full access to his legal counsel and allow him to attend subsequent court proceedings from his residence.

“The fear I have is that El-Rufai was ill; he went to the hospital,” Amaechi stated. “I hope he does not die in detention. That would spark off what the government cannot manage. The earlier they left him to go home and go to the hospital, the better for everybody.”
