A disagreement erupted in the Senate between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo North over the leadership eligibility criteria.

This comes less than 24 hours after the upper chamber revised its Standing Orders to limit eligibility for leadership positions to senators with at least two consecutive terms.

The rule change effectively shuts out Oshiomhole from vying for any presiding office in the 11th Senate.

Tension flared during plenary when Adams Oshiomhole attempted to raise a point of order just as Godswill Akpabio called for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings from the previous sitting.

Akpabio declined to recognise him, prompting Oshiomhole to repeatedly shout “point of order” in protest.

Efforts by Mohammed Monguno, the Senate Chief Whip to calm the situation proved unsuccessful, as Oshiomhole continued to interject during proceedings.

Godswill Akpabio responded by issuing a stern warning and referencing the Senate’s rules on conduct.

Godswill Akpabio said, “The rules and laws governing the Senate Chamber, including its corridors and passages, are clearly defined.”

He added, “The Senate President is empowered to sign warrants, subpoenas, resolutions, and other official documents issued by order of the Senate.”

Godswill Akpabio continued, “He is also responsible for ensuring adherence to the rules of debate.”

He further stated, “Let me be clear, Senator, many people may not have seen this order, which is why I am reading it out.”

Godswill Akpabio said, “The Senate President is tasked with maintaining order during debates and giving rulings on points of constitutional order when they are raised.”

He added, “He also has a casting vote in the event of a tie, but does not vote in any other circumstance.”

Godswill Akpabio stated, “Most importantly, he has the authority to interpret the rules, this is clearly stated.”

He cautioned, “So, Senator should not come into this chamber, especially on matters as serious as contested elections, without a proper understanding of the rules.”

Godswill Akpabio warned, “Let me emphasize once again, Senator Oshiomhole, if any member becomes unruly in the Senate, such a member will be asked to leave.”

He concluded, “This is the final warning.”

Following Akpabio’s warning, Oshiomole kept quiet in the chamber.
