African union hails Edo energy reforms, picks state as model for Africa

The African Union Commission (AUC) has identified Edo State as a model for energy sector transformation in Africa, citing the state’s remarkable progress in expanding electricity infrastructure and implementing reforms that are driving industrial growth and economic development.

The continental recognition comes with an invitation to the Edo State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, to serve as an Inspirational Speaker at the Joint 9th Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Finance and the 5th STC on Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, scheduled to hold in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from July 20 to 24, 2026.

The invitation was conveyed in a letter signed by Regis Tade, Innovation Expert in the Directorate of Industry, Mining, Entrepreneurship and Tourism (IMET), under the African Union Commission’s Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals (ETTIM).

In the letter, the Commission commended Edo State for its “notable progress achieved in the energy sector,” describing the state’s experience as a compelling example of innovation, strategic vision and results-driven leadership capable of inspiring similar reforms across Africa.

According to the AUC, Edo State’s achievements in strengthening energy infrastructure and expanding access to electricity have positioned it as a reference point for governments across the continent seeking to enhance power supply, accelerate industrialization and improve economic competitiveness.

The Commission noted that the state’s experience would enrich discussions on financing Africa’s industrialization, deepening regional trade, promoting sustainable economic growth and leveraging strategic investments to transform the continent’s economies.

The Abidjan summit is expected to bring together ministers, policymakers, development finance institutions, private sector leaders and other stakeholders to explore practical solutions for accelerating Africa’s industrial and economic transformation.

The AUC said programme details, participation arrangements and logistics had already been communicated to the Edo State Government and expressed its readiness to provide any additional support required ahead of the event.

The recognition represents a major endorsement of Edo State’s energy reform agenda and reinforces the growing importance of sub-national governments in driving Africa’s industrialization, attracting investment and advancing sustainable development through improved power infrastructure.
