Abia announces plans to start rehabilitation of Obohia road, this week

People of Obohia community in Ukwa-East Local Government Area of Abia State and its neighbours in Aba South Local Government Area, also of Abia State, will soon heave a sigh of relief, as the State Government has announced that reconstruction of Obohia road, which links the two LGAs, would commence this week.

Bob Ogu, State’s commissioner for works, revealed this in a telephone interview, explained that the contractor handling the road has completed its preliminary investigations and assured that they will start work between now and Friday, this week.

Ogu explained that the state government has mapped out roads in Aba, Umuahia, and some other parts of the state for rehabilitation before the end of the current dry season.

He affirmed that work has resumed at the Osisioma interchange and added that the contractor handling the Ayaba-Umeze road, also in Osisioma Local Government area is back on site.

Ayaba-Umeze road, which has been in deplorable condition for so long hosts Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

Ogu also stated that the contractor handling Aba-Owerri road has been mobilized back to site, while rehabilitation of Ngwa and Ohanku roads started, Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

The Commissioner, while speaking on roads within Umuahia and other parts of the state explained that contractors handling Ubakala road, Umuahia, starting from Afor-Ibeji market in Old Umuahia to the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, would return to the site on Friday, this week.

According to him, contractors handling Umuenne-Obikabia road, in Obingwa LGA and Mgboko-Okpu Umuobo road that connects Obingwa with Osisioma Ngwa LGAs, are back on site.

He also revealed that the contractor handling the road project at Umunneochi has been mobilized back to the site.

“The Umuokpara ring road in Umuahia South is also ongoing. Contractors are back at Agalaba ring road in Obingwa LGA, as well. The contractor handling Umuobiakwa-Owo road in Obingwa is back on-site”, he stated.

Ogu further stated that the state government would re-asphalt three major roads in Umuahia before the end of the dry season, stressing that contractors for the works are ready to move back to site.

Asked on the time frame for completion of listed ongoing road projects, the Abia State Commissioner for Works, noted that most of the projects are expected to be completed, while others are to get to a certain reasonable lengths, before the end of the current dry season.

According to him, “In Ngwa road the least we can do before the end of the dry season is to get to the point of doing the stone base. At Ohanku road, at least we’re targeting to complete and asphalt four Kilometers before the end of the dry season.

“We’re targeting total completion of Aba-Owerri road before the end of the dry season. We are also targeting the completion of Ayaba-Umeze road, before the end of the dry season.

“At Obohia road, NEWMAP is constructing an underground tunnel there and it is at the completion of the tunnel that will determine when the road would be completed.

On the abandoned Aba-Port Harcourt road, a federal road, Ogu noted that the state government is still discussing with the contractor handling the project, noting that work will resume as soon as they conclude their arrangements.
