NITT Zaria obtains NBTE approval to offer diploma courses

The Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) said it has obtained the approval of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to offer a National Diploma (ND), National Innovative Diploma (NID) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in various fields of transportation.

Bayero Salih Farah, the director-general of the NITT, told BusinessDay in Lagos recently that the current management has upgraded the Institute in terms of infrastructure and training of more staff, and to build quality faculty that would have the capacity to deliver on key programmes in the transport and logistics industry.

According to him, NITT has also introduced new programmes different from the professional programmes offered by the Institute before the emergence of the present management in line with the expanding needs of the transport and logistics industry.

“We have approached the National Board for Technical Education for the approval and accreditation to offer National Diploma, National Innovative Diploma and Higher National Diploma Programmes in various fields of transportation. This year, we started about five National Innovative Diploma programmes and we have admission for over 100 students for these programmes,” Farah said.

He said that NITT hopes to start another round of programmes that would be for NDs and HNDs by September having received approval from the NBTE.

“So, we are working from all fronts to ensure that we live up to our mandate of providing qualified professionals that would run the Nigerian transportation and logistics industry. Our programmes cut across all the transport modes including air, road, rail and maritime transports,” he added.

On the challenge facing the Institute, Farah said that the Institute is run on a national budget, which is inhibiting its drive to reposition and provide all the necessary facilities required to achieve its mandate.

“We want the government to begin to pay more attention to the Institute as regards our responsibility and contribution to economic development in terms of provision of the skilled manpower that would run the nation’s supply chain system,” he said.

Established in 1986 and headquartered in Basawa Zaria as well as branches in 10 states of the federation, NITT serves as a transport management development and research institute for Nigeria and the West African Sub-region.
