Nigerian importers

After serious protect by Nigerian importers through the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), CMA CGM, the French Container Transportation and Shipping Company, has followed in the footsteps of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in announcing the suspension of the application of the Peak Season Surcharge on cargoes calling in Nigeria from 1st October, 2020.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company and Maersk Line had earlier suspended application of the controversial surcharge from 1st September 2020 as a result of protests by Shippers’ Council and other stakeholders, said Rakiya Zubairu, head, Public Relations of the Council in a statement sent to BusinessDay.

Zubairu stated that the suspension of the peak season surcharge was contained in a letter sent to the executive secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Hassan Bello on Tuesday from the head office of CMA CGM in Marseilles France.

Recall that the Council had recently convened a meeting of the Organized Private Sector to deliberate on the astronomical peak season surcharge imposed by shipping lines calling Nigerian ports, and it was resolved that the Council should escalate the protest to all the necessary authorities.
