Umar Yusuf Girei, acting managing director/chief executive officer, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has assured that the Authority has been positioned to improve drastically in its service delivery to achieve the objectives of the federal government.
Girei stated this at NIWA headquarters in Lokoja, while speaking on the outcome of the recent 2-day executive anti-corruption training with the theme, ‘The Art and Practice of System Integrity in Public Institutions’ organised for Board members, management and area managers of the Authority held in Abuja recently.
The event was organised by NIWA in collaboration with Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC).
He said that the choice of the event was born out of the desire of NIWA to improve on the revenue generation through blockage of leakages and prevention of corruption within the system to drive good leadership.
“Obviously, in any organisation revenue is the backbone and the strength because nothing can be done without resources.
“The choice of the theme for the training was carefully chosen to enable us check what we are doing and to look inward on what we can do to generate more money for NIWA and to achieve the objectives of the federal government,” he said.
Speaking on the 2026 NIWA management retreat, the Acting Managing Director said that the retreat aimed at strengthening NIWA’s systems and processes to promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and performance-driven leadership.
“The essence of the retreat is to enable us rub minds together with the board and other critical stakeholders so that there can be a wider collaboration among all the stakeholders so that together we can take NIWA to where it ought to be based on our mission and vision as spelt out by the constitution.
“With this retreat and training organised for our management staff, we are now positioned to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
