The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards 2026 opened on Wednesday with Young Filmmakers Day, placing attention on emerging creators and the evolving structure of African storytelling ahead of the main awards ceremony.

Held at the Multichoice Studio in Lagos, the gathering brought together young filmmakers, digital creators, and industry professionals for conversations around filmmaking, audience engagement, and the growing role of technology in content creation.

Facilitated by Uche Jombo, the session focused on the realities of working in film and digital media, particularly for creators at the early stages of their careers. Discussions covered storytelling, navigating the business side of filmmaking, and adapting to changes in how audiences consume content.

The panel supported by Johnnie Walker Blonde featured Amarachukwu Onoh, Abiodun Odu, and Stan Nze, with moderation by James Bentong Mbu. The conversation examined how filmmakers are responding to new tools and workflows, including artificial intelligence and digital distribution platforms.

The Speakers also discussed how younger creators are increasingly moving between film production and digital content creation, reflecting broader changes in the entertainment industry where audiences now consume stories across multiple platforms.

Speaking during the session, Oyetola Akeredolu, Brand Manager for Johnnie Walker, said the initiative was designed to support experimentation and new approaches to storytelling.
“Our philosophy is built on the world of unexpected expressions. What we see with young filmmakers today is a willingness to experiment, to try new formats and to tell stories in ways that feel natural to them,” Akeredolu said.

The event has also shown the growing overlap between film and digital media, particularly as platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and streaming services continue to influence how African creators build audiences and distribute content.
Young Filmmakers Day marks the first major activity of the AMVCA week, ahead of Icons Night on Thursday, Cultural Day on Friday, and the awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday.
