“10 Days in Sun City”, Akpos’ South African Adventure

Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY played major roles in his new block buster movie “10 days in Sun City“. He played the role of the producer as well as the lead character in this new movie. Over the years AY has produced very hilarious Nigerian movies ranging from 10 days in Atlanta, a trip to Jamaica and now this 2017 hit.
The obvious facts for most of his movies have being the calibre of cast and crew, the story line and script, the words and slang used all through and a particular “Warri Slang” that later becomes the slogan or key highlight of the movie. For this edition two outstanding slang in the movie was an insult which was formerly known as “your father” but now referred to as “Your real Dad” and the one he used to refer to Agbani Darego which he explained meant that “Agbani don reign go”.
The most important thing for me when I watch a movie is the story line and the lessons learnt. What exactly can be taken from the movie. Despite it being funny and hilarious to majority of the people in the cinema that night, most of us didn’t quite get the story-line or take home any lesson.
Well apart from AY, our amiable and adorable Adesuwa Etomi and handsome Richard Mofe Damijo who played key roles in making this movie.

The producer was bent on making a movie that was going to have a blend of comedy and action; although they didn’t quite get the action scenes for me as they seemed quite unrealistic. The movie had a story line that most aspiring beauty queens could resonate with – how they moved from grass to grace and from being nobody to being superstar and models. Bianca’s story wasn’t far-fetched at all from this also. She was a beauty queen from the small city called Warri in Delta State of Nigeria. She never ever thought she could become the face of Nigeria and represent the country in the Miss World pageant.
Akpos (AY), who was her manager as well as her boyfriend had totally sacrificed everything for her to move to Lagos. So she could contest for the bigger titles. On travelling to Lagos they faced a lot of challenges as Akpos didn’t have money for accommodation, they had to move from one place to another. At a point, one of Akpos relatives lured his girlfriend into high class prostitution and when she wouldn’t give in, she drove them out of her home. The truth was that Akpos was very determined and wasn’t willing to let any circumstance whatsoever get him down. He believed so much in Bianca and was convinced she was going to win. After all they went through, Bianca won the contest in Lagos and this led to her being selected for a big time contract and photo shoot in Sun City, South Africa.

She insisted that her manager went with her and Chief Otunba wasn’t happy at all. He was a well known wealthy business man, who got whatever he wanted especially beauty queens, he would lure them with money, have a relationship with them, where they are used as sex slaves and battered continuously, but Bianca never knew she almost fell for his dubious plans. Otunba’s previous South African girlfriend had to warn her to run and leave the town with her boyfriend Akpos, who she discovered, loved her dearly.

The highlight of this movie was towards the end when Akpos had to find people to help him fight Otunba. They had to find Bianca and get out of the public function, where she would have been crowned the face and ambassador of the new product. Akpos and the team were fortunate to get in and the fight was hilarious. Good thing they succeeded in killing Otunba and they made it out of Sun City.

To my verdict I would say 10 Days in Sun City deserves a 5/10, I didn’t really understand the plot. They had a lovely set of cast and crew, and the production was good, but most people got lost on many occasions and were asking question, if it was still morning or the next day? The movie was funny to some people but didn’t hold water or substance, and this is vital for any movie. For the Nigerian comedy lovers, then maybe this is a good movie for the weekend, but this is not a full recommendation from me.
