Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday, made stunning revelations while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) probing allegations of financial malfeasance in the Commission.
One of the disclosures – that 60 percent of contracts in the NDDC were awarded to National Assembly members – led to a heated dialogue between Akpabio and a committee member.
“NDDC is where it is today because of lack of monitoring, lack of supervision,” said Akpabio.
The NDDC is seen as a haven for corruption, with a litany of abandoned projects.
The Niger Delta region is still hugely underdeveloped despite billions allocated for projects.
Akpabio had earlier said that N2.5 billion was approved for a forensic audit for the commission. But Joy Nunieh, a former acting managing director of the NDDC, had previously claimed that no forensic audit is ongoing in the commission.
