Abimbola Onakomaiya, MD/CEO of PeakThrust Insurance Brokers Limited

Abimbola Onakomaiya is the MD/CEO of PeakThrust Insurance Brokers Limited, an insurance broking company strategically placed to attain a leadership position in insurance consulting and broking services.

Though an Economist who graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University, as at the time Abimbola’s love for insurance blossomed while in the UK, she says insurance was like the ‘big sister’ in the financial sector because it was tops, followed by the banking and accounting industry. She believed that insurance was definitely going to be worth her commitment.

Her background in Economics (OAU), and later Masters in Management and Technology obtained at University of Wales spurred her on however, it was a little bit different when she got back to Nigeria. She did not think of banking or accountancy because in the UK, insurance was tops nevertheless, her career in the insurance sector in Nigeria began.

When she got back to Nigeria, she says Nicon insurance, being the top insurance company at that time, was where she began.

“I was in the reinsurance department at that time and later went to marine insurance department as well as the Oil and Energy department. I was in Nicon for 10 years, became pensionable and then moved into the private sector, went straight to Anderson consulting (later became Accenture) and set up their insurance desk.” Onakomaiya stated.

After that, she moved to Unic Insurance Plc, up until she became the Assistant General Manager in Oil and Energy department. Her intention was to retire from there as she did not want to start up a brokerage business for herself but there were issues that took place there at the time, she left and birthed PeakThrust Insurance Brokers Limited in 2003.

PeakThrust Insurance Brokers Limited holds a vantage position in providing fast, efficient and qualitative services to federal government parastatals, manufacturing organisations, oil production, servicing and marketing companies, construction and engineering outfits and others.

Abimbola is a fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London, with a career in insurance spanning 35 years. She has had the opportunity to interact with other highly professional colleagues in the financial industry.

With the training as a member of a consulting firm of international repute, she has developed skills in change management and human capital reorientation.

Her experience as a special risks underwriter in oil and energy, as well as marine insurance, has enabled her interact at very high government and multinational levels with institutional power brokers and decision makers in Nigeria.

Her job as a direct marketer has enabled her hold discussions with top executives when the bid specifications have had to be submitted and defended.

A beneficiary of the Total Quality Management training, she believes in the rare quality of putting in one’s best and doing things right the first time.
