To achieve the required growth in insurance industry, women in insurance have canvassed for right of place in leadership positions based on gender equality and competitiveness.
The Professional Insurance Ladies Association (PILA) now marking its 50th anniversary in the industry says women occupying just nine percent of chief executive officer’s position in the industry was very low.
They believe that the bottlenecks bothering on gender inequality must be removed for women to professionals in the industry to make reasonable impact and growth of the industry.
Margaret Moore, president, Professional Insurance Ladies Association (PILA) said at a press in briefing held in Lagos to celebrate its 50 anniversary that, as one of the leading professional associations, PILA has played a significant role in fostering gender equality, professional development, and industry growth since inception 29th May 1973.

Moore, joined by past presidents and other executives stated that PILA’s primary focus has been empowering women to excel in the insurance industry by offering training, capacity-building workshops, and platforms for knowledge sharing and networking.
“To commemorate this milestone, PILA is hosting a series of events and initiatives this month of June and throughout the year, under the theme “50 Years of Excellence: Celebrating Women, Inspiring Futures.”
According to her, these activities will highlight the association’s achievements, honour its members, honour her loyal sponsors and supporters in and outside the insurance industry, and inspire the next generation of female insurance professionals.
Moore said it is through their unwavering commitment that PILA has also been able to make a lasting impact on the lives of countless women outside the shores of Nigeria.
“PILA has been instrumental in encouraging the establishment of Women in Insurance Associations in African countries visited during their bi-annual International exchange programmes.”
“PILA also championed the establishment of the African Insurance Women’s Association (AIWA) which was admitted as a member of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO) and inaugurated at a side event during the just concluded 49th AIO Conference which in Algiers”.
Part of activities lined up to mark the anniversary celebration includes Ju’mat Service on Friday at the Civil Service Mosque, Alausa, Lagos; Insurance Awareness walk in Lagos and cities where PILA chapters are present on Saturday; Symposium/ Webinar on Tuesday themed – Leadership and Sustainability: System Thinkers in Action, and Book launch, Award and Gala Night on Wednesday at the Ballroom, Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos, which will be featuring Ibukun Awosika as our guest speaker; and thanksgiving church mass on Sunday at the Catholic Church of the Assumption, Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos.
