Sickle Cell Summit to raise awareness in Akure

The Sickle Cell Health Initiative (SCHI) is set to host an awareness summit on the sickle cell disease in Akure, Ondo State.

The event aims to raise awareness, educate the public, and foster collaboration to address the challenges posed by sickle cell disorder.

Under the theme ‘Understanding Sickle Cell Disorder: Breaking the Sickle Stigma,’ the summit will convene healthcare professionals, policymakers, patients, caregivers, and advocates to discuss the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and management of sickle cell disorder.

Participants can engage in informative sessions, workshops, and panel discussions led by renowned experts in the field and sickle cell management.

Key issues to be covered include advances in sickle cell treatment and management; the importance of early diagnosis and genetic counseling; strategies for community support and awareness; the role of government and non-governmental organisations in combating sickle cell disorder.

Itote Ifedayo, SCHI programs coordinator expressing his excitement to host the event in Akure said stakeholders from various sectors must unite and share knowledge and strategies for combating sickle cell disorder.

“Our goal is to empower individuals and communities with the information and resources they need to improve the quality of life for those affected by this condition and create a strong awareness of Sickle Cell Disorder in all communities in Ondo state,” Ifedayo stated in an official statement provided to BusinessDay.

In addition to the educational sessions, the summit will feature an exhibition area where attendees can explore the routine drugs and medical services related to sickle cell care.

There will also be opportunities for networking and collaboration among attendees.
