Nigeria is at a huge risk of facing a third wave of COVID-19 pandemic with less than a percent of its population vaccinated, Akin Abayomi, Lagos State’s commissioner for Health cautioned on Wednesday as he outlined steps to beef up surveillance against the current variant of concerned.

Although the daily rate infection rate countrywide is at a steep low, the commissioner said close monitoring is being put in place to prevent the importation of new variants of the virus especially among those returning from red list countries such as India, Brazil, and Turkey.
According to the state’s analysis, the positivity rate is rising among international returnees as 51 percent of positive cases were led by Nigerians while India and China accounted for 44 percent in April.
