Delta government confirms outbreak of lassa fever, debunks cholera

Delta State Ministry of Health says it has only one confirmed case of Lassa Fever and has not recorded any confirmed case of Cholera in the State, recently.

Joseph Onoejaeme, the Commissionsr for Health, stated this at the weekend while responding to questions on the outbreak of disease in the State.

Onoejaeme, a medical doctor, assured residents of the State that “the State Government is closely monitoring the suspected cases of Cholera outbreak in some communities in Burutu and Isoko South Local Government Areas.

“The state’s Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to the communities affected for immediate response, case management and infection prevention and control.”

Onojaeme stated that the Ministry “is working closely with other relevant Ministries, departments and agencies, and partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), to ensure that the health of residents are safeguarded.”

He advised that early presentation at health facilities could significantly improve survival rate.

He also explained the symptoms of Cholera to include severe diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting, and rapid weight loss while that of Lassa fever include fever, weakness, headache, vomiting, and, in severe cases, bleeding from body openings.
