The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Borno State Branch, has urged residents to desist from self-medication and seek professional medical care promptly following a confirmed cholera outbreak in the state.
Business Day had earlier reported that nearly 40 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,000 cases recorded as a result of the crisis in seven local government areas of Borno State.
This was contained in a statement by Suleiman Muhammad Farusi, Publicity Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Borno State Branch, to journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday.
“Our wish is to draw the attention of residents of Maiduguri and its environs to the ongoing outbreak of cholera, a highly infectious diarrhoeal disease that can lead to severe dehydration and death if not promptly treated.
NMA said individuals experiencing symptoms suggestive of cholera should: “Immediately begin taking Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) if available. Increase fluid intake. Present to the nearest healthcare facility without delay for assessment and treatment. Avoid self-medication and seek professional medical care promptly,” he said.
They called on community leaders, religious leaders, educational institutions, healthcare workers, and the media to support ongoing public health efforts through awareness creation and promotion of proper hygiene practices.
“We also urge government agencies, development partners, and relevant stakeholders to intensify surveillance, ensure access to safe water and sanitation facilities, and strengthen public health interventions to contain the outbreak.
“Together, through vigilance, good hygiene, and prompt medical attention, we can prevent further spread of the disease and protect our communities,” NMA warned.
