Roberts Ungwaga Orya has been reappointed by President Goodluck Jonathan as the managing director of the Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM) effective August 17, 2014.

His reappointment was confirmed in a letter signed by A.M Daniel-Nwaobia, permanent secretary, Ministry of Finance, on Monday.

“I write to convey the approval of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR for your re-appointment as managing director/CEO of NEXIM Bank for a final period of five (5) years,” the letter read in part.

“Please accept the congratulations of the coordinating minister for the economy and honourable minister of finance,” it added.

Roberts Orya was first appointed the NEXIM Bank managing director in 2009 and has since led the transformation of the bank, returning it to profitability after years of losses under a MASS agenda, which focuses on four key sectors- manufacturing, agro-processing, solid minerals, and services.

Among his numerous achievements, perhaps, the outstanding is the dogged initiation of a sea-link project that would facilitate exports, not just for Nigeria but within West and Central African regions.

“With regards to specific tangible corporate transformation and achievements, I would say that the bank has redefined its mission and vision statements and also developed new strategic objectives that would be achieved through focus on key areas of risk management and corporate governance, financial performance, review of operations and organisational, processes and people.

“We also had to define our market focus on channeling of resources into development of four sectors, namely manufacturing, agro-processing, solid minerals, services, in what we called ‘MASS AGENDA.’ These sectors have high employment and foreign exchange generation potential in the non-oil sector of the Nigerian economy,” Orya said of the bank’s achievements in a recent interview.

Orya has over 25 years experience in banking and finance, covering investment, commercial and mortgage banking.

Prior to his appointment as MD/CEO of NEXIM Bank in 2009, he had held various senior positions in the Nigerian banking sector.

Orya attended University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and holds an M.Sc in Banking and Finance. He is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and London.

He is a certified member of Pension Institute of Nigeria, and Nigeria Institute of Management. He is also a member of the Institute of Management Consultants.
