The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has declared the candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari winner of the Saturday February 23 presidential election.
According to Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Buhari polled a total of 15, 191, 847 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 11, 262, 978 votes in an election marred with low voter turnout of 35.66 per cent and ballot box snatching recorded in some states.
Buhari won 19 out of the 36 States of the Federation leaving Atiku with 17 States and the FCT.
The INEC chairman while announcing the results said, “I Professor mahmood Yakubu hereby certify that I was the returning officer for the presidential election held 23 February, that the election was contested, that the candidates received the following votes.
“That Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared winner and is returned as the President.”
