Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN), operator of the NNPC/MPN joint venture, has confirmed a liquid release from its Qua Iboe terminal facility on Sunday, June 29, 2014 following serious weather conditions and lightning strikes over the area.

It, however, said it is doing everything to contain it.

According to the company, when the incident happened it immediately activated its emergency response systems and contained the release.
It, however, stated that subject to a detailed site inspection, the estimate of the release is put at approximately 12 barrels of oil.

All relevant regulatory authorities and community leaders, the company said, have been notified just as it is working with community leaders to gain access to the impacted area and continue to work to ensure the impacted area is remediated.

Offshore production and loading operations, it further stated, are continuing, while it assured of its commitment to environmentally safe
operations.

Meanwhile youths from Eket under the aegis of the Core Youth Forum have alleged that the company had been indifferent to the damage it caused to the environment.

They marched in protest along Marina and Terminal roads and other major streets in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

According to a statement credited to one Godwin Peters, who spoke on behalf of the youths, he said the spill occurred on Saturday offshore and later got to shoreline in Ibeno and other host communities on Sunday afternoon.
