The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (DISCO), a joint venture of New Electricity Distribution Company and Korea Electric Power Corporation, on Wednesday said it had spent over N11 million to replace vandalised equipment in the last six months.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Mr Pekun Adeyanju, Assistant General Manager (Public Affairs) of the company, said that the company had replaced facilities in 42 transformer distribution sub-stations with its network.

“The replacement of the vandalised substations cost the company over N11 million. The 42 transformer distribution substations were vandalised at various times in the last six months by unknown vandals, thus throwing various communities into darkness,’’ it said.main-power-transformer

The management said that the money spent to replace the vandalised sub-stations would have been better used in procuring new materials for network expansion.

It therefore appealed to community leaders in the area to assist the company in protecting electrical equipment in their domain.

” The socio-economic effect of vandalism is colossal as it unleashes hardship on people and businesses. Every citizen in Ikeja DISCO network has a duty to perform towards the safety of electrical equipment because it is extremely difficult to put a guard at every transformer substation.

“We solicit further assistance of security agents on the surveillance of Ikeja DISCO equipment for adequate protection against vandalism,’’ the statement said.
