Schneider Electric is betting that West Africa’s next wave of growth in oil and gas, data centres and real estate will hinge on how well the region can keep the lights on.

The French energy management group said Thursday it is bringing its next-generation BlokSeT low-voltage switchboard to the market, a move aimed at giving utilities and industrial operators tighter control over power reliability as demand for digital, always-on infrastructure accelerates.

The rollout lands at a moment when West African economies are racing to build out the kind of infrastructure, from hyperscale data centres to expanded transport networks, that leaves little room for outages. Unplanned downtime in those sectors can carry steep costs, and grid operators across the region have been under pressure to modernise ageing distribution equipment without sacrificing uptime.

“Across West Africa, reliable and intelligent power distribution is essential to support economic growth and infrastructure development,” said Nurudeen Oyedeji, Channel Sales Director for Schneider Electric West Africa. “With the next-generation BlokSeT, we are providing our channel partners and customers with a future-ready solution that delivers high performance, enhanced safety, and real-time visibility. It reduces downtime, optimises maintenance, and operates more efficiently in even the most demanding environments.”

The switchboard handles power distribution and motor control at up to 7,000 amps and is built to IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 standards, with internal arc classification and compartmentalised design intended to shield personnel and equipment during faults. Schneider says the units have been fully type-tested for high short-circuit withstand, a specification that matters in markets where grid fluctuations are more common than in mature power systems.

Beyond the hardware, the pitch centres on data. BlokSeT ships with embedded wireless thermal sensors that continuously track busbar and cable connections, feeding into Schneider’s EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert and Facility Expert platforms. The aim is to let operators catch overheating or connection faults before they cascade into failures — shifting maintenance from a scheduled, calendar-driven exercise to one triggered by actual equipment condition.

That predictive approach is central to how Schneider is positioning the product against legacy switchgear still common across the region. Traditional maintenance cycles typically rely on fixed inspection intervals regardless of equipment condition, an approach that can miss developing faults or, conversely, take healthy equipment offline unnecessarily. Continuous monitoring, the company argues, allows maintenance teams to intervene only when data indicates a problem is forming.

The switchboard also comes with intelligent power and motor control centre, or iPMCC, functionality aimed at industrial users looking to squeeze more efficiency out of motor-heavy operations, along with seismic resistance and corrosion protection for harsher operating environments. It carries Schneider’s Green Premium designation, part of the company’s broader sustainability labelling for products assessed on environmental impact.

Schneider says BlokSeT has already been installed in the hundreds of thousands of units globally, giving it a track record the company is now leaning on as it pushes into West African markets where switchgear buyers — from utilities to EPC contractors — are increasingly weighing digital capability alongside price and delivery times. The company said the product will be supported through its network of manufacturing and service partners, part of an effort to keep lead times and after-sales support localised rather than routed through distant regional hubs.
