Sigh of relief as Computer Village traders cheer police, army for warding off looters

#ENDSARS: IGP orders deployment of anti-riot Police officers to protect lives, property

Residents and business owners in the popular computer village, located in Ikeja, Lagos are now able to heave a sigh of relief after security agencies successfully repelled a barrage of attacks by hoodlums trying to gain access and loot the market.

Yesterday, BusinessDay had confirmed heavy gunshots that saw individuals scampering to safety, from multiple accounts by residents and business owners contacted.

Dubbed the largest market for computing and mobile devices, the market is equally described as the largest ICT accessory market in Africa.

The Computer Village in Ikeja is also within close proximity to the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), a new BRT station, Jara Mall, the Lagos State Police Command, Lagos State High Court, and of course both the local and international Airports.

A statement signed by Timi David Famoroti, president, Coalition of Associations in Computer Village, appreciated the efforts of men of the Nigerian Police Force, their counterparts in the Nigerian Army, and other security officers who mobilised to ward off the assailants.

Specifically noted in the statement were Leye Oyebade, Deputy Inspector General in charge of Zone 2; Hakeem Odumosu, Commissioner of Police in Lagos; John Ali Zongo, Area Commander ‘Area F’; the chairman Lagos State Taskforce; and the Commander Nigeria Army 81 Brigade and all Security officers that came to the rescue of the market and its environs.

“Our hearts go out to the family of all those who lost their lives during this trying period. God will surely give you the fortitude to bear the loss,” said Famoroti. “Our desire and prayer in all of this are that a new Nigeria will emerge.”

For several hours on Thursday, a contingent of soldiers earlier reported by BusinessDay to be standing guard at the roundabout by Ikeja Underbridge were joined by police officers in warding off multiple aggressive, desperate attempts to loot the Computer Village in Ikeja by individuals said to be hoodlums.
