The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce has expressed concern over the recent unrest in parts of South Africa, warning that the situation could negatively affect businesses, investor confidence, and economic relations across the continent.
The Chamber, in a statement on Wednesday, said the disturbances have impacted communities, livelihoods, and commercial activities, particularly affecting members of the Nigerian community and other African nationals resident in South Africa. It also noted that South African businesses and the broader investment climate could suffer adverse consequences if tensions persist.
It stressed that the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa has been built on mutual respect, trade, cooperation, and a shared commitment to Africa’s economic growth, adding that these values must guide responses during periods of uncertainty.
“As an organisation committed to strengthening economic and cultural ties between both countries, we believe moments such as this require restraint, constructive engagement, and responsible leadership,” the statement said.
The Chamber called on government authorities, community leaders, civil society organisations, and citizens to embrace peaceful dialogue and uphold the rule of law, noting that the protection of lives, businesses, and investments remains critical to sustaining regional stability and investor confidence.
It further urged Nigerian and South African authorities to deepen collaboration in addressing the root causes of tensions, prevent further escalation, and strengthen frameworks that promote conflict resolution, social cohesion, and economic inclusion.
According to the Chamber, preserving strong bilateral relations between Africa’s two biggest economies is essential for regional trade integration, cross-border investment, and long-term continental prosperity.
The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders in both countries to promote unity, economic resilience, and stronger commercial partnerships despite current challenges.
