One person has been reportedly shot dead as ENDSARS protest turns violent in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The protesters numbering hundreds had marched around major streets in Uyo while blocking the popular Ibom plaza which serves as a relaxation spot and an open mall.

Motorists approaching the plaza had to take alternative routes within the city, an ugly development that has been the practice since the protest began on Monday.

It was gathered that the protesters attempted to prevent a vehicle belonging to one of the security outfits from passing through the plaza when a protester was shot.

According to an eye witness, the victim was rushed to a hospital by the protesters where died on the way.

To show their displeasure, they took the corpse to Akwa Ibom State Government House but they were repelled by security forces.

Along the barracks road where the Governor’s office is located, the protesters started hauling stones and attacking government vehicles and private businesses.

It was further learnt that the Access bank building located along Barracks road has been set on fire.

“It was generally peaceful before the protester was shot, there has been reinforcement involving soldiers and the police,” one source said.

While many have identified with the aim of the protesters, others have expressed fears that the protest march has been hijacked by hoodlums and cultists.

It was also gathered the protesters appeared to have been imported from other states to cause mayhem in the state.
