Lagos state will begin the investigation of the shooting of unarmed protesters that took place at the Lekki toll gate on Monday evening, the Governor of the biggest city in Africa, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Thursday.
“We can set up the investigation panel over the weekend because we are still in a curfew now and with the hope that all of this will be behind us in either one or two days, we can indeed say that by Monday they should be able to start,” Sanwo-Olu said while speaking to Arise TV.
It was gathered that Nigerian soldiers had turned their guns on peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday, a development that escalated the over a dozen days of youth-led protests at strategic locations across Nigeria against brutality by a rogue police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Meanwhile, there were pictures and graphics of engineers removing cameras at the toll gate while there was also light out before the shooting.
“That camera that you saw is not a security camera, it’s a laser camera for vehicles, it picks the tag on cars,” Sanwo-Olu said.
According to the Governor, security camera for the toll gate are still available, “these are some of the footage that we are going to use for our investigation.” He added that security camera is “installed on top of towers and I have seen them and they are there and are still recorded, nobody can touch the security camera.”
Sanwo-Olu also assured that the security cameras as well as the removed ‘laser camera’ will not be tampered with. “ I can assure you that they are in safe keep, what we should do is to ensure they are under lock and key and that nobody has access to them and in the event of any tempering, we’ll get experts to look into it.”
