Olam bets on micro extrusion technology to improve fish feeds

Agribusiness giant, Olam International has unveiled a micro extrusion technology known as Aqualis which it said will set a new quality standard for fish feeds in the Nigerian market.

According to Olam in a statement released to BusinessDay, the launch of Aqualis is in reaffirmation of its mission of supplying food and industrial raw materials to customers worldwide. The product, it said, will revolutionize fish farming in Nigeria.

Aqualis fish feed, which is the first offering from Olam International on its animal feed investment, has a nutritional content and the right balance of protein that ensures better growth and high fish yield.

“The micro extrusion technology also ensures the delivery of the right feed size thus minimizing wastage of the feed and maximizing profits for the farmers,” said Ashish Pande, Business Head, Olam International.

The launch of Aqualis brought together farmers, fish farm business owners, distributors and representative from the government, including Onimim Jacks, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Rivers State.

The commissioner commended Olam for the quality of Aqualis and also the scale of investment that the company has made in Nigeria especially in the adoption of the most modern and first-rate technology for the production of high quality feed.

The technology used in the manufacture of Aqualis, the statement noted, is a very innovation that delivers a fully floating feed which is beest suited for the feeding behaviour of the African catfish.

Olam International was established in 1989 initially to trade cashew from Nigeria to India. The company has evolved today to build a global leadership position in many agri-business sectors such as Edible Nuts, cocoa, spices and vegetable ingredients, coffee and cotton. The entrance of fish feed production is with the aim to directly contribute positively to the growth of the fish farming business in Nigeria.
