#NES 26: Government does not have internal capacity to deliver on promises—Obaseki

Edo to attract infrastructure investment via tax credit scheme

Governor of Edo State Godwin Obaseki says the major problem with governance in Nigeria is that government does not have the internal capacity to deliver on promises.

Speaking at the 26th edition of the Nigerian Economic Summit (#26) on Monday, Obaseki said the cost of governance is gradually going down but the country needs to emphasise the ability of government to support the private sector.

“We must move from the mindset of the private or public sector to the ‘Nigerian’ sector. It’s a false dichotomy we’ve created for ourselves. We must avoid the buck-passing and begin to merge and work together,” he said.

On his part, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State said there have been calls all over the country for restructuring, stressing that it should be taken holistically.

“This is the turning point for the government to make that kind of restructure,” he said.

“We are in a position to make Nigeria work, and is achievable if we have a leadership that’s hands-on, that can mobilise a process of bringing together the private sector & provide the framework to.”
