“Do not love me/Do not care/This heart has nothing to share,” the author, Andy Damisa, says in his collection of poems, A Lazy Poet, a written inspiration from the author’s personal experiences and those around him.
There is anger in this collection of 22 poems, but this is one poetry book that reveals not only sad happenings but also captures how we’re affected by our surroundings.
At first glance on the book cover and title, a reader could get a feeling of doubt about this book. Damisa’s writing is blunt yet his poems are so personal.

From the very beginning of the book, the author induces us to realize that we create our own future. The first two poems have great wisdom regarding staying positive and looking to God for strength during hard times. In addition to sharing his innermost feelings, the author includes quotations at the beginning of every poem, one among many is an African proverb, made famous by Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart.
Damisa speaks about learning everywhere and anywhere in the third poem. It is inspiring in the sense that it calls upon people not to be afraid to live life and try something new. His words of wisdom and advice are universal and equally valuable for everyone.
The author uses rhymes to emphasize the need to enjoy every moment of life in the 4th poem. Damisa goes on to write: “Lay your youth not to waste/ For but once only/ You shall have its taste” Reading these lines, you may come to the conclusion that every moment, is of infinite value.
In ‘Do Not Love Me’, the author’s tone is angry. Damisa exposes his pain without shame, even when his words could lead to judgment. Although it is difficult to keep a positive attitude in such situations, this negative reaction might just make the circumstance worse.
As shown in the ‘Pain Song’ and ‘Grief’ poems, pain can be intense. The author’s words are deep and his tone is sympathetic and demonstrates a longing for help. To say that Andy Damisa has a gift for good diction would be an understatement.
Much has been written about pain in this book, and getting a glimpse into the author’s mind on romance in the ‘The Golden Quartet’ helps us take a break from the trials of everyday life allowing readers to see that craving for affection is a very human thing.
To the general reader many of the poems seem emotional, accompanied with a lot of difficulties but life is hard and this book is a way to show others that even though bad things happen, you are definitely not alone and the only difference is how you feel at the end of the day.
A Lazy Poet is all of these and more and definitely worth reading.
