Leaking roof affects conveyor belt operations at MMIA

The conveyor belt at the old Muritala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) terminal is currently covered due to a leaking roof, bringing down raindrops directly on the conveyor belt.

A source at the old terminal who described the situation as an ‘eyesore’ said the conveyor belt is currently covered to reduce the impact of the rain on the conveyor belt.

Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection FAAN, told BusinessDay that the leaking roof at MMIA is part of why the aviation minister has said the old terminal needs to be shut down for repairs.

Yakubu-Funtua noted that if any conveyor belt is currently covered, it is undergoing maintenance, which may not take more than a day to fix.

Last week, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, directed airlines and companies operating in the airport to move to the new terminal, MMIA Terminal Two, constructed by the Chinese company, as the old terminal will be shut down for repairs on October 1, 2023,

Keyamo explained that the Lagos gateway is the first impression passengers get when they enter the country, adding that the solution is that the government must use what it has for now.

“I am giving international airlines till October 1 to move from the old terminal to the new terminal. We are going to shut down the old terminal and sort out all the issues regarding the renovation,” the minister said.
