Kano Government launches ₦2bn Initiative, empowers Women with 7,158 Goats

Abba Yusuf, Kano State Governor, has launched the distribution of 7,158 goats to empower 2,386 women as part of a N2 billion initiative aimed at reducing poverty and promoting economic self-sufficiency.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the distribution marks the second phase of the Women Empowerment Initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

Valued at N2.3 billion, the programme provides livestock to women across all 44 local government areas of Kano State. Each beneficiary receives three goats to support their ventures in livestock entrepreneurship, fostering financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

“The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing poverty through innovative and inclusive approaches,” he said.

The spokesperson added that the programme’s subsequent phases would include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth.

“Yusuf said the initiative was part of his administration’s broader strategy to empower vulnerable groups and foster economic independence among women and youth in the state,” he added.

“He warned the beneficiaries against using the livestock for other purposes, stressing the need for accountability and responsibility in the programme.”

Dawakin-Tofa said the initiative “reflected the administration’s focus on sustainable development and empowering communities to stimulate grassroots economic growth”.

“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the programme aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid,” he said.

“The initiative has been widely praised as a significant effort to improve livelihoods, strengthen food security, and create wealth in Kano’s rural communities.”
