ECOWAS tap Turkïye for antiterrorism battle

ECOWAS tap Turkïye for antiterrorism battle

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray

Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, has urged Turkïye to intensify its support for West Africa’s fight against terrorism, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration in tackling regional insecurity.

Touray made this call in Abuja when he received Hidayet Bayraktar, outgoing Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, on a farewell visit at the commission’s headquarters.

Describing Turkïye as a “privileged partner of ECOWAS” and a “major global power,” Touray stressed that Ankara’s continued commitment was crucial for peace, unity, and security in the region.

“Turkïye is a major partner of Africa and a privileged partner of ECOWAS. Its leadership is hailed and appreciated throughout the African continent”, he said.

Touray highlighted ECOWAS’ ongoing collaboration with the United Nations in addressing security threats and noted that terrorism remained the subregion’s greatest challenge.

He commended Bayraktar for his contributions to strengthening ties between Turkey and ECOWAS, while also emphasizing the need for sustained, deliberate efforts to promote stability.

“ECOWAS’s major challenge is insecurity, and none of its member states can face it alone.

“If we are not united, we cannot combat this threat. Unity and collective collaboration are essential to preserve peace and stability in West Africa”, he stated.

In response, Bayraktar reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to deepening its partnership with ECOWAS in countering violent extremism and promoting regional stability.
