Brussels conference raises $496 million for Central African Republic

The international community pledges 496 million dollars in humanitarian aid for the Central African Republic (CAR), EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva says at the end of a donors meeting.

“Today’s meeting put an end to the CAR being an aid orphan forever,’’ Georgieva says.

She says 200 million dollars will go toward addressing urgent humanitarian needs while 296 million dollars will be used for stabilisation measures such as restoring basic services and setting up cash-for-work programmes.

The pledges cover 90 per cent of what the UN estimates the CAR humanitarian needs to be for 2014, French Development Minister Pascal Canfin says.
