Dun & Bradstreet Nigeria, the country’s only official provider of the globally recognised DUNS Number, is alerting the public to a growing number of fraudulent individuals and entities falsely claiming to offer DUNS registration services on behalf of the company.
As a globally trusted leader in business data and analytics, Dun & Bradstreet issues the DUNS Number (Data Universal Numbering System) — a unique nine-digit identifier for businesses — to help verify the legitimacy and track record of organisations around the world. In Nigeria, Dun & Bradstreet Nigeria is the only authorised body for issuing this number.
Recently, however, a disturbing trend has emerged. Individuals posing as representatives of Dun & Bradstreet have been targeting unsuspecting businesses and professionals online, promising quick DUNS registration in exchange for payment — often through unverified channels.
“We do not outsource DUNS Number services to third parties or agents,” said Atinuke Williams, Snr. Mgr. Customer Success & Engagement at Dun & Bradstreet Nigeria. “Any such claims are false, and we urge the public to remain vigilant. The only safe and credible way to obtain a DUNS Number in Nigeria is through our official website or verified communication channels.”
These impersonators not only jeopardise the integrity of the DUNS system but also expose businesses to the risk of data theft, financial fraud, and reputational damage. Some victims have reported losing money or receiving fake DUNS Numbers that do not appear in the global Dun & Bradstreet database.
