Bolaji-Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdullahi, dep- uty director, Policy and Strategy, Bu- hari Campaign Or- ganisation, has said that the present administration will review the Universal Basic Education (UBE) funding mechanism, in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, yesterday.

He said the review would be in line with the All Pro- gressives Congress (APC) manifesto, as a review of the mechanism would promote proper development of basic education in the country.

The review was also nec- essary due to the fact that state governments had re- fused to access their UBE fund meant for the advance- ment of basic studies, he said, saying “we are going to Buhari to review UBE funding mechanism carry out a holistic review of the Universal Basic Educa- tion funding mechanism to see what we can do.

“We will proffer alterna- tive means of funding basic education in states, since the funds are not being harnessed or utilised by some state gov- ernments due to the non- payment of counterpart funds.’’

In a separate nterview, Chioma Osuji, policy ad- visor, Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), urged the Federal government to re- view the UBE funding policy, as the inaccessibility of the funds by state governments was a hindrance to educa- tional development, stress- ing that learning was critical to the nation’s economic growth.
