Following the victory by Nigeria’s Super Eagles over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, a video of Nigerians celebrating the country’s passing in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has gone viral on social media.

The Super Eagles fans were seen taunting their rivals by pouring water over their bodies while jamming to the hit song Water by South African singer Tyla.

The 23-year-old won Best African Music Performance at the Grammys on Sunday, beating several Nigerian superstars like Davido, Asake, Ayra Starr, and many more.

Disappointed by the outing at the Grammys, Nigerians responded by vowing revenge at the AFCON semi-final which saw Nigeria beat South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 Wednesday night.

The trending hashtag #NGARSA captures the lighthearted jabs traded between the two Africa giant nations.

Nigerians playfully boast about their superior jollof rice compared to South Africa’s bobotie, but the heart of the banter lies in the musical realm.

Nigerians declare Afrobeats the champion genre, urging South Africans to stick to their rising star, amapiano – a blend of hip-hop, soul, and house music gaining global traction.

Jimmy Odukoya, a popular Nigerian pastor even joined the fun, commending the South African team for their performance but playfully reminding them, “You need water,” adding, “if it’s any consolation, it’s Grammy water.”

With Nigeria set to face the host nation Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday, South Africans are likely to drum their support behind the Ivorians, while Nigerians are hopeful that the team will clinch its fourth African title.
