Lawan wins senate presidency race

Senator Ahmed Lawan has emerged the senate president of the 9th National Assembly (NASS) after a keenly contested race with his opponent Ali Ndume.

Lawan emerged winner of the election by polling 79 votes out 107 votes that were cast, representing 73.8 per cent of the total votes. Two senators-elect were absent during the election. There are 109 members in the senate.

Ali Ndume who was endorsed by the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had on Monday boycotted the meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee meeting with the party’s governors and National Assembly members-elect to seal the deal for the election of its preferred candidates of the 9th National Assembly presiding officers.
