Saraki says Buhari’s ‘purported victory’ will be short-lived

Defection: APC makes desperate move against Saraki

Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki said on Wednesday that the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari as the country’s president for another term of four years would not last for long.

At the opening session of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Saraki described Buhari’s victory at the polls as “purported victory”, saying the PDP would defeat Buhari at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

Buhari was declared winner of the February 23 presidential election with 15.19 million votes as against 11.26 million votes polled by his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku and the PDP rejected the results and this week filed a five-ground petition at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja challenging the victory of Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC).

“My own appeal to everybody is to say this victory that the other party has seen is going to be short-lived. We have a great future ahead and I believe we will start that on Saturday, to make sure that we defend those five states that are declared inconclusive,” said Saraki, who was also director-general of Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation.

“If anybody believes that it is a loss to PDP, it is a loss to the country that history will not forgive. We said many times here, that the worst to do is to do an election that as a country, Nigeria will not be proud of. We have done an election that no doubt anybody and even those that think they have won are ashamed of the kind of election we did,” Saraki said.

“I think it is a shame to the country and those that were given that responsibility to do. We are setting a bad example not only in Nigeria but in the continent, when we bring militarisation into our election,” he said.
