President Muhammadu Buhari will attend the the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)beginning on Monday in New York City, United States, Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity revealed in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.
The 5 day event which will brings together world leaders will have Buhari deliver Nigeria’s statement at the opening of the General Debate of the Assembly on “The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transform Our World.”
Buhari would also be attending a novel high-level summit organized by the General Assembly at the Heads of State and Government level hinged on “Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants’’. The expected outcome is a blueprint for a better global response to improve the protection of migrants and refugees.
Adesina also disclosed that Nigeria would be organizing a summit highlighting the need to rally international response to the situation in the Chad Basin. It is to be attended by the leaders of member-countries of Lake Chad Basin. On this note, the President would be delivering a keynote address on “Taking Climate Action toward Sustainable Development in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.”
Adesina disclosed that Buhari is prepared for a productive and engaging schedule which entails attending a series of meetings beneficial to the Nigerian cause. The President will also be participating in an event hosted by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, on “Ending Need in the Lake Chad.
“On the margins of the 71st UNGA, President Buhari will sign the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and participate in activities commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Declaration of the Right to Development”, Adesina said.
Giving the rise in the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), Buhari would be holding bilateral meetings in a bid to improve the fate of said persons. Similarly, the security in the North-East would also be a focus topic.
