The BusinessDay Banking Awards 2016 held yesterday at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites. CEOs, delegations, members of boards of various financial institutions, media houses and major stakeholders graced the event.

The event began with a mini networking and meet and greet session following a red carpet and kicked off fully with the national anthem led by the event host, top comedian Ali Baba.

The Publisher, Frank Aigbogun gave an opening remark in which he stressed that the Research and Intelligence Unit at BusinessDay had put in a lot of work into selecting the winners at the event and thanked everyone for their presence.

In his speech, the Lagos state governor, Akinwumi Ambode  represented by Former Lagos State deputy governor, Femi Pedro, said that the sector had a role to play in ensuring monetary policies of the government were made effective in charting the economy. He urged the recipients to see their awards as an inspiration and motivation to move up the ladder while congratulating them on their win.

”It is an honour that you are being recognised by your peers”, he said.

The awards started in earnest and below are the list of winners in all the categories and criteria for selection;

Best Bank in Support of Agriculture – UBA (Parameters: Performance in CBN’s Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme (CACS); each bank’s agric loans as a percentage of the total loans)
Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility- Firstbank (Parameters: CSR spend as a percentage of the total PAT)
Best Bank in Support of Manufacturing- Zenith Bank (Parameters: Bank’s manufacturing loans as a percentage of the total loans)

Outstanding Achievement in Banking  – Chief Jim Ovia: Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Banking

Most improved Bank in Retail Banking- Union Bank (Parameters: Bank’s retail banking deposits/liabilities as a percentage of the total deposits/liabilities; bank’s retail banking loans/assets as a percentage of the total loans/assets; bank’s retail banking PAT as a percentage of total PAT)

Best Bank in SME Banking – GTB (Parameters: Bank must have an SME segment as a segment of operations; Bank’s SME banking deposits/liabilities as a percentage of the total deposits/liabilities; bank’s SME banking loans/assets as a percentage of the total loans/assets; bank’s SME banking PAT as a percentage of total PAT)

Special Leadership Award – MD/CEO Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (Effective leadership for the protection of depositors’ funds)

Most Customer Friendly Bank – FirstBank (Parameters: The percentage of the customers’ complaints resolved out of the total complaints received)
Deal of the Year Award – The $800 million Capex Facility for IHS Nigeria by Rands Merchant Bank (Parameter: Highest monetary deal done by merchant banks)
Most Innovative Product of the year – Diamond Bank’s Future and Cool Kids product (Parameters: Interactions  with customers)
Best Managed Funds (Type A-Equity Based Funds) – FBN Capital Assets MGT’s Anchor Funds
Best Managed Funds (Type B-Equity Based Funds)  – FBN Capital Assets MGT’s Money Market Funds

Best Bank Promoting Islamic Banking in Nigeria – Jaiz Bank Plc (Parameters: Islamic banking products/desks)

Best Nigerian Bank in Sub Saharan Africa – UBA (Parameters:Number of branches in Sub Saharan African countries; growth in PAT)
The Most Improved Bank in Mobile Banking – Diamond Bank (Parameters: Volume and value of mobile transactions)
The Most Innovative Investment Bank – United Capital Plc (Parameters: Execution of Deals in Nigeria and other African countries)
Bank of the Year – Access Bank (Parameters: Qualitative: Timely release of financial reports; availability of audited report on bank’s official website; presence of analyst’s presentation on bank’s official website. A bank that fails any of these criteria will not be considered at all. Quantitative: loan/deposit ratio; CSR and a % of PAT; Loans growth; PAT growth; growth in deposits; Capital adequacy ratio(CAR); NPL; liquidity ratio;  Return on Average Asset(ROAA); Return on Average Equity(ROAE); Net Interest Margin(NIM); cost to income ratio; growth in net assets; share price appreciation; dividend growth and Bank CEO of the year score.)
Guests were serenaded to a great African’s legendary music by Dare Art Alade and were treated to fine cuisine and drinks.
AirFrance also gave away a blank return ticket to one lucky winner who was selected from a random selection of call cards from the guests present.
