The High Court in Harare, Zimbabwe has turned down a move by the police to ban the ongoing protests in the nation’s capital following unrest in the country stemming from dissatisfaction with Mugabe’s long-standing rule and the state of the country.

The High Court Judge, Priscilla Chigumba ruled that the ban on protests was illegal and that the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law were important to democracy.

Once of the activist who was represented by lawyer and former finance minister Tendai Biti said that the judgement was a brave decision and that protests will continue peacefully to challenge what they referred to as ”mismanagement of the country.”

President Mugabe at the weekend criticised a court which had given permission for an anti-government protest at the end of August.

He said that the judges had shown a reckless disregard for peace and warned that they should not dare to be negligent when making future decisions.
