The Council of State is currently meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan in attendance.

Former Heads of State Abdusalami Abubakar and Ernest Shonekan are also in attendance at the meeting which is expected to ratify the appointment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris who has been serving in acting capacity.

At the meeting former President Jonathan stole the show as photographers all turned their cameras on him. This is Jonathan’s first Council of State meeting in this administration. The first meeting held in October last year.

The Council which is chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari also consists of the vice president as the deputy chairman, all former presidents and all former heads of the government of the federation, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, state governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The Council is also expected to consider possible nominees for the positions of National and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC currently has six national commissioners out of 12, while 21 out of 37 Resident Electoral Commissioners are yet to be appointed.
