Few days to the governorship election in Edo State, officers and men of the state police command have been advised to be “professional police and not political police.”
BusinessDay reports that the outgoing commissioner of police (CP), Chris Ezike, gave the admonition while handing over to his successor, Fimihan Adeoye, in Benin City.
Ezike, who urged the officers to remain professional police with integrity, noted that he was leaving the state better than he met it, saying, “For the election, Nigerians are looking up to Edo State to lead so that others will follow. You either remain a professional or a police politician.”
While assuring the people of the state that adequate security arrangements have been made for next Saturday election, he observed that elections in the country had been inconclusive because of security challenges.
He however urged the new CP and the Edo Police Command to implement the laid down security arrangement for the success of the gubernatorial election.
Ezike, who is now on posting to Police College, Ikeja, as Commandant, however disclosed that cultism was the root of all crimes in the state, saying it has been fought to a standstill just as he enjoined his successor to continue in the same spirit.
In his comment, the new CP thanked the outgoing commissioner for his briefs and successes recorded, promising to improve on what he met on ground.
