Abia State government says it has awarded contracts worth about N42 billion for construction of roads and provision of other social amenities across the state.
Bonni Iwuoha, state commissioner for information and strategy, who disclosed this to newsmen in Umuahia soon after the state executive council meeting, said the council after reviewing the report of the Finance and General Purpose Committee arrived at awarding the jobs to different government contractors in the state.
He said the contractors had been directed to adhere to the design and advice of the various supervising ministries while executing their jobs.
The commissioner said that the Faulks-Ariaria-Ugwu Mango road, which was initially awarded to Setraco Construction Company Limited at N5.7 billion, was reviewed upwards to N6.8 billion because of the complex nature of the road and for the proper channelisation of Ifeobara Basin, which he revealed had posed problem on the road.
Iwuoha also said the state executive council was aware of people going about the cities collecting illegal levies, claiming to be doing so on behalf of government, following this development the state government had set a taskforce that would go all out to assist government in apprehending the hoodlums in Aba and other cities in the state.
