Instagram says it is extending limit of videos from 30 second to 60 seconds from Tuesday, according to CNBC report.
The Facebook owned company is hoping that the increase amount of video consumption on its platform which has risen to more than 40 percent in the past six months will attract new users.
“Longer videos mean more diverse stories from the accounts you love, whether it’s Selena Gomez, hanging out with friends or beauty star Bretman Rock’s latest makeup tutorial,” read a statement from Instagram.
The service will be available on both iOS and Android. The iOS version of instagram is also being updated with the ability to assemble videos from multiple clips found in the camera roll.
At the moment though, only a small group will have the capacity to start, including verified and nonverified users. “In the coming months,” Instagram said it will be rolling out to everyone.
The strategy comes on the heels of latest trends by many people to use video to express their moments. Prior to now, the 60 second videos were only available for advertisers. Kevin Systrom ahd said at the time, “Our mission is to capture and share the world’s moments, and we live that every single day.”
There are concerns of decline in quality of content posted to the platform. This is because of the inherent challenges in shooting, editing and putting together a video story in a coherent way.
The company has over time released improvements for its service including more filters and a slow motion-capability. It also added video counts to posts which enable sharers to keep tabs on how many people actually watched and liked their videos.
