Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM) has been named Nigeria’s sole member of Duke University’s Innovation Alliance, joining a select global network of institutions advancing innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology-driven education.
The university’s selection came at the inaugural cohort of the Innovation Sandbox, a 12-month peer programme convened by the Future Universities Alliance, a global learning network incubated by Duke University, USA.
NUTM emerged as the only Nigerian institution among the 49 institutions selected from 23 countries across five continents. Selection followed a competitive process amongst over 325 universities globally.
Babs Omotowa, the pro chancellor and chairman of NUTM’s governing council, giving more insight into the remarkable feat, explained that the Nigerian University of Technology and Management will participate in one of three Sandbox pathways.
Through this pathway, the university will bring its work on advancing technology-enabled entrepreneurship as part of the future of education.
“NUTM’s selection is a reflection of what we set out to build when we founded this institution, to achieve a top-50 global university ranking.
“Being the only Nigerian institution in this cohort affirms that the work we are doing is recognised globally, and we look forward to working with partner universities and shaping the future of education globally,” he said.
The Future Universities Alliance is a global platform connecting start-up, emerging, and established universities to reimagine what higher education can be.
The Future Universities Alliance is a global platform connecting start-up, emerging, and established universities to reimagine what higher education can be.
Incubated at Duke University, the Alliance operates as a pluralistic, open-source network that brings together innovators who embrace cooperation and are eager to adapt promising ideas to their own contexts.
It accelerates the spread of innovative practices through shared learning, while rejecting the notion that education is a race or that one system can simply be exported to another.
Alec Gallimore, provost at Duke University, speaking about the mission, said, “Innovation cannot thrive in isolation, nor can it stop at incremental change.
“By creating a platform for leaders to learn with and from one another, we ensure that promising ideas spread and that together, we tackle the systemic challenges reshaping higher education.”
The Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM) is a not-for-profit STEMME (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Management, and Entrepreneurship) university based in Lagos, Nigeria.
NUTM’s mission is to graduate leaders in technology and management who will make an impact in Africa.
