Rising security concerns threaten hard-won peace in Kaduna 

Fresh security concerns in Birnin Gwari Emirate are threatening nearly two years of relative peace in an area once notorious for banditry, raising fears among residents, farmers and community leaders about the future of stability and economic recovery in the region.

In a statement signed and issued to newsmen on Saturday by its Chairman, Isah Muhammad, the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) expressed concern over reports of renewed criminal activities by a few armed elements who continue to operate outside ongoing peace arrangements. According to the union, some of the criminal groups have reportedly invaded farmlands, intimidated farmers and forcefully seized motorcycles, mobile phones and other valuables belonging to residents.

The group warned that if urgent measures are not taken to curb the activities of these elements, the hard-earned peace achieved through collaboration among government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions and community stakeholders could be undermined.

BEPU’s concerns were heightened by the recent killing of Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver from Birnin Gwari, who was reportedly attacked while travelling from Kaduna to Birnin Gwari through the Buruku area of Chikun Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred three days ago, has generated widespread grief and renewed anxiety among residents about security along major routes connecting the emirate.

The tragedy also triggered tension within the community, leading to the assault of three Fulani individuals by some aggrieved persons who had previously suffered losses from criminal attacks. Security personnel intervened swiftly, restored calm and ensured the victims received medical treatment before being discharged from hospital. No lives were lost during the incident.

In response to the growing concerns, BEPU has called on the government and security agencies to take immediate action to halt rising insecurity, particularly in eastern parts of Birnin Gwari, including communities such as Kuyello. The union also urged authorities to intensify efforts to recover illegal firearms, strengthen intelligence gathering and increase security patrols across farming communities and major roads.

The appeal comes at a critical period as the rainy season reaches its peak and farmers intensify cultivation activities. Community leaders fear that continued threats against farmers could discourage agricultural activities and negatively affect food production across Kaduna State and neighbouring regions.

Agriculture remains the backbone of Birnin Gwari’s economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of residents and contributing significantly to food supplies within and beyond Kaduna State. Any disruption to farming activities caused by insecurity could have far-reaching consequences for food security, local incomes and regional economic stability.

BEPU stressed that farmers must be able to access their lands without fear of intimidation, attacks or extortion. The union warned that a return to widespread insecurity would reverse years of progress and jeopardise ongoing efforts aimed at rebuilding livelihoods and restoring confidence among residents.

Beyond security operations, the organisation called for a comprehensive review of the existing peace process to identify emerging challenges and address them before they escalate. It also advocated increased engagement with local communities to reassure residents of government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while discouraging resort to self-help or armed self-defence.

Despite the current challenges, community leaders acknowledged the remarkable progress recorded over the past two years. Through coordinated efforts involving government, security agencies, traditional rulers and local stakeholders, many communities previously affected by bandit attacks have experienced relative peace, allowing economic and social activities to resume.

The union noted that Birnin Gwari’s peace-building experience has attracted attention as a model that other communities and states seek to emulate. However, it cautioned that sustaining such gains requires vigilance, continued dialogue and decisive action against criminal elements determined to undermine reconciliation efforts.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum, BEPU also urged politicians and political actors to avoid exploiting security issues for political advantage. The organisation warned that the sacrifices made by residents in pursuit of peace should not be manipulated to inflame tensions or undermine ongoing reconciliation initiatives.

The union further advised motorists and commercial drivers to avoid unnecessary night journeys and to comply with security advisories issued by relevant authorities.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, BEPU pledged continued support for lawful initiatives aimed at enhancing security and promoting development in the emirate. The organisation also called on all residents, regardless of political or ethnic background, to remain united, cooperate with security agencies and support efforts to preserve stability in Birnin Gwari.

For many residents, the challenge now is ensuring that the gains of the past two years are protected from emerging threats so that the emirate can continue its journey toward lasting peace, economic recovery and sustainable development.
