Real Madrid have continued their summer rebuild with the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konate on a four-year deal after the centre-back joined as a free agent.
A statement from the club read: “Real Madrid C.F. and Ibrahima Konaté have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.”
Konaté leaves Liverpool after opting not to renew his contract at Anfield, bringing an end to a successful spell with the Premier League side.
The France international, who is currently representing his country at the FIFA 2026 World Cup, arrives at the Santiago Bernabéu to strengthen José Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new season.
Mourinho’s rebuild gathers pace
Konaté becomes the latest addition to Mourinho’s squad following the arrivals of Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella earlier this summer.
Real Madrid have also been linked with Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as the club continues to reshape the squad after two trophyless seasons.
The arrival of Konaté adds depth and experience to Madrid’s backline, with the 27-year-old expected to compete for a regular starting role during the 2026/27 campaign.
A new transfer strategy emerges
The signings of Silva, Cucurella, and Konaté, along with the potential addition of Dumfries, suggest a noticeable shift in Real Madrid’s recruitment strategy.
Rather than focusing primarily on emerging young talents, the club appears to be prioritising experienced players capable of making an immediate impact under Mourinho.
Konaté made 132 appearances for Liverpool after joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, helping the club win major domestic and European honours while establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s leading central defenders.
His arrival represents another significant statement of intent from Real Madrid as Mourinho seeks to restore the club to the summit of European football.
