…Distribute internet routers to 100 schools

In continuation of its efforts to drive digital inclusion and advance quality education across Nigeria, IHS Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Kano State Ministry of Education, has conducted the IHS Digital Literacy Training and School Connectivity Programme for principals and ICT teachers from 100 selected schools across Kano State.

The training programme, which brought together 200 participants comprising one principal and one ICT teacher each from the selected schools, was implemented by Focus Teens Foundation (FTF) on behalf of IHS Nigeria Limited and was held at the SBMC Hall of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Kano.

The Kano training follows the official kick-off of the Digital Literacy Training Programme for 2026, which took place in Lagos on June 3, and forms part of a broader effort to support the Government’s digital economy agenda and drive Nigeria’s digital transformation by expanding internet access and strengthening digital skills in schools.

The initiative is aligned with global and national efforts to map and achieve universal school connectivity by 2030, ensuring that schools are connected to reliable internet services and that students and teachers are equipped with the digital competencies required to thrive in the modern world.

Speaking during the programme kickoff in Lagos, Titilope Oguntuga, Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, noted that digital literacy is a necessity in an evolving digital world, stressing that every Nigerian child deserves access to the knowledge, skills, and tools required to thrive in the digital age.

“Through our Digital Literacy Training initiative, we are going beyond infrastructure to strengthen capacity. This expanded effort is focused on equipping teachers with practical digital skills to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning, enhance classroom delivery, and maximise the benefits of digital infrastructure in schools,” Oguntuga noted.

Delivering the opening remarks, Baahir Baffa Muhammad, Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Education, represented by the Director of Schools, Sagir Umar Danbare, emphasised the importance of digital literacy and internet connectivity in improving teaching and learning outcomes across the State.

He commended IHS Nigeria Limited, UNICEF and other development partners for supporting the government’s efforts to modernise education through technology. He noted that the initiative reflects the shared commitment of the Kano State Government and its partners to expanding access to digital learning opportunities and ensuring that no learner is left behind in the digital age.

Also speaking at the event, Rabiu Sale Gwarzo, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSSMB), represented by the Deputy Director of Schools, Mallam Isa Datti, highlighted the importance of equipping school leaders and ICT teachers with the skills required to drive digital transformation and technology adoption within schools.

The digital literacy training sessions were facilitated by Olaonipekun Kazeem, who led participants through practical modules covering digital literacy, school connectivity assessment, responsible technology use, digital learning tools, and data-driven decision-making for improved educational outcomes.

At the end of the training session, IHS Nigeria provided each of the 100 participating schools with an internet router and a one-year free internet subscription, enabling schools to strengthen internet access, support digital learning initiatives, and provide teachers and students with access to online educational resources.
