Real Madrid have completed the signing of Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva on a two-year contract, the Spanish giants announced on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old joins Los Blancos as a free agent after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season, bringing to a close a trophy-laden nine-year spell at the Premier League club.
Silva’s contract at the Santiago Bernabéu will run until June 30, 2028.
End of an era at Manchester City
Silva departs City after making 459 appearances and scoring 76 goals since arriving from Monaco in 2017.
During his time under Pep Guardiola, he established himself as one of the most versatile and influential midfielders in Europe, helping City win 15 major trophies.
His honours include four consecutive Premier League titles between 2021 and 2024, the historic Treble in 2023, and a clean sweep of the four major domestic trophies during the 2018/19 campaign.
Madrid beat rivals to Silva’s signature
The Portuguese international had been heavily linked with a move to Spain in recent months, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also reportedly interested in securing his services.
However, Real Madrid won the race for his signature as they continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
Silva becomes the club’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth £52 million.
Perez and Mourinho lead Madrid’s rebuild
After failing to win major silverware in each of the last two seasons, newly re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has moved quickly to strengthen the squad.
Earlier this month, Perez appointed Jose Mourinho as head coach as part of an ambitious rebuilding project at the club.
Madrid are also expected to continue their recruitment drive, with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate reportedly a target when his contract expires at Anfield. Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries has also been linked with a move to the Spanish capital.
The arrival of Silva adds experience, creativity and a winning pedigree to Mourinho’s squad as Real Madrid look to reclaim domestic and European honours.
